An ancient monument can refer to any early or historical manmade structure and/or architecture. Certain ancient monuments are of cultural importance for nations and have become symbols of international recognition. For example, the ruins of Baalbek appear on Lebanese currency, the image of Angkor Wat is used on Cambodian currency and the Great Wall of China on the Chinese currency. Stonehenge is well known for its odd assortment of large stones. In midsummer there is an alignment, where the Sun rises over the Heel Stone. How did the ancients do this and why? As of January 2024, there are a total of 1,199 World Heritage Sites, and this includes ancient monuments. Let’s take a look at some of these.
